Kentucky General Assembly Passes Nonpublic School Legislation

Frankfort, KY.  On April 2, 2002  the House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 210 sponsored by Senator David Boswell. Nonpublic school advocates including the Kentucky League for Education and the Catholic Conference of Kentucky sought the legislation.

Nonpublic school members have long been denied appropriate representation on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Board of Control. Senate Bill 210 requires changes in KHSAA bylaws by creating two seats for nonpublic school representatives.

Harry Borders, Executive Director of KLEA said, "Passage of Senate Bill 210 is a victory for equal representation and fair play of nonpublic schools on the KHSAA Board of Control." Nonpublic schools supporters worked within the KHSAA organization to change its bylaws. KHSAA Executive Director, Louis Stout, supports the change in the Board of Control as well as a majority of KHSAA member representatives who voted in December 2001 to allow nonpublic schools representation.
